COACHING PHILOSOPHY
EXPERIENCE
MEETS SCIENCE.
My coaching philosophy begins with understanding the whole athlete. I take the time to analyze training data and history, ask thoughtful questions, and listen closely to each athlete's goals. But numbers tell only part of the story. I also want to understand the person: their life, personality, motivations, challenges, and what brings them joy. From there, I look for the "holes in the bucket" that may be limiting progress. The solution is rarely one-dimensional. We may need to develop fitness and power, improve technical skills, build confidence, manage fear or anxiety, or create a better balance between training and everyday life. Some athletes need encouragement to push beyond what they believe is possible, while others need help knowing when to hold back.
My goal is to help every athlete become stronger, more confident, and more capable in all aspects of cycling. I define progress not only by performance, but also by what athletes learn about themselves. Their victories are deeply rewarding because I know our partnership played a part in helping them succeed.
THE FULL STORY
ABOUT ME AS A COACH.
I truly enjoy helping my athletes achieve their goals. Whether it's a simple request like "I want to get stronger and faster" or a more complex one like "I want to win or podium," it's exciting to watch your progress, both through data and tracking and also through careful listening and understanding each athlete. As Tim says, mixing the science with the art is what makes the magic.
Cycling has been in my blood since I was a little girl. My first two-wheeler was a used blue bike with fenders and fat tires (this was before mountain bikes!). Little did I know I would be a cat 1 mountain bike racer in my 30s and 40s! My first ten-speed bike in eighth grade was an orange Schwinn Varsity that my parents got me for Christmas. That bike took me everywhere and set the stage for my lifetime love of cycling, exploring, and adventure.
Before working with BaseCamp as a coach, guide, and athlete coordinator, I owned an outdoor retail chain of stores for 23 years, selling clothing and gear, as well as guiding backpacking, canoe, and cross-country ski trips for my customers. I have always enjoyed my work; I love talking with people and helping them find what they need for success and happiness.
I am a jack of all trades. There is always something to do in my world! Besides cycling, I love to garden, paint, cook, walk the dog, swim, play, read, and create. I love to travel, too; being able to see different customs, cultures, and landscapes has been an amazing gift and a huge part of me.

IN THEIR WORDS
ATHLETES ON COACH KATHY
I greatly appricate Kathy’s ability, willingness to work with my constant changing schedule. I add events and unfortunate injuries which create many adjustments. Kathy does an excellent job of helping me rebuild from injury and reset goals. - Ken C.
Kathy remains very responsive to my inquiries, my challenges regarding physical injuries and pain therein and the emotional/psychological challenges associated with the latter and life changes and challenges in general. I feel comfortable knowing that Kathy understands and supports how cycling fits into my current life. She is flexible and does her best to accommodate to meet my needs and schedule and although she expresses with confidence an apparent built-in (genetic) bonus I have in having a pretty darn good engine particularly at my age, she never pushes me to race. I love her depth of knowledge and use of WKO to explain where I'm at and progress made. - Barbara B.
