Getting started with Zwift

The weeks before BaseCamp begins are a great time to get familiar with Zwift! If you're new to Zwift, we recommend visiting Zwift's how-to page, and we've got our best tips below.

Step 1: Set Up Your Zwift Environment

To get the most out of Zwift and your BaseCamp workouts, you'll need a few key pieces of equipment:

  • A trainer: Choose between a smart trainer (ideal for power-based training with automated resistance) or a classic trainer (requires a speed sensor). Smart trainers like the Wahoo KICKR or Tacx Neo provide the most immersive experience.

  • Bike and trainer setup: Mount your bike securely on the trainer. Check tire pressure if you're using a wheel-on trainer, and make sure your drivetrain is clean for smooth operation.

  • Zwift-compatible devices: You'll need devices to run the Zwift app, such as a computer, tablet, and/or smartphone. For the best experience, use a device with a larger screen and connect it to a TV or monitor.

  • Accessories: A fan, towel, water bottle, and under-trainer mat will help keep you cool and comfortable.

Step 2: Create Your Zwift Account

Once your equipment is set up, create a Zwift account:

  • Visit zwift.com to create a user name and password and purchase a subscription.

  • Enter your personal information, including weight and height, for accurate in-game metrics.

  • Pair your devices (trainer, power meter, heart rate monitor, etc.) with Zwift using Bluetooth or ANT+; click here for instructions.

Step 3: Zwift Training

Zwift offers a variety of training options. Here's how to make the most of them in your BaseCamp plan:

  • Free-ride mode: This is great for recovery rides or exploring the virtual world.

  • Workouts: Use Zwift's built-in workouts or sync your BaseCamp workouts directly to Zwift.

  • Group rides and races: Join the BaseCamp community on Zwift for team rides or virtual races to boost motivation.

  • Use Zwift's interface to monitor your power zones, heart rate, and cadence. Linking your Zwift account with your TrainingPeaks account provides seamless integration; click here for instructions.

Step 4: Syncing BaseCamp Workouts to Zwift

Your BaseCamp workouts can be completed directly on Zwift when your accounts are linked.

  • Ensure your TrainingPeaks and Zwift accounts are connected.

  • On the day of your workout, your workout will appear in your Zwift account in the "Training" menu under "TrainingPeaks Custom Workouts (click here for more details).

  • Select your workout, hit "Ride," and follow Zwift's on-screen prompts and resistance changes (if using a smart trainer).

Step 5: Join a group workout

Maximize the motivation of Zwift by joining a group workout! Our coach-led public group workouts match the workout in your training plan; click here for instructions on joining a group workout.

In these workouts, all riders stay together even though they may have different levels of fitness and ability. How? All the workouts are individualized to you based on your FTP, and Zwift keeps us together so no one gets dropped or rides off the front.

Step 6: Making It Fun

Zwift isn't just about hard work; it's about enjoying the ride. Engage in social group rides, earn badges, or explore the scenic Watopia roads. With the BaseCamp community, you'll never ride alone, even in the virtual world.
